Quotes from “The Art of Loving”

I’ve been busy lately, but I am back with some of my favorite quotes of  “The Art of Loving” by Erich Fromm. They are listed below with the pages, let me know which is your favorite and if you’ve read, or plan to read it. I am enjoying it very much.

“Two persons thus fall in love when they feel they have found the best object available on the market, considering the limitations of their own exchange values.” (3)

“There is hardly any activity, any enterprise, which is started with such tremendous hopes and expectations, and yet, fails so regularly, as love.” (4)

“Love is the active concern for the life and growth of that which we love.” (25)

“…respicere = to look at), the ability to see a person as he is, to be aware of his unique individuality.Respect means the concern that the other person should grow and unfold as he is…If I love the person, I feel one with him or her, but with him as he is, not as I need him to be as an object for my use. It is clear that respect is possible only if I have achieved independence; if I can stand and walk without needing crutches, without having to dominate and exploit anyone else.” (26-27)

I still need a little while to complete the book, but so far I am enjoying reading about love from the perspective of a philosopher.
